Raymond Charles Gwartney was born on September 15th, 1934 in Sterling, CO, and passed away, at the age of 86, on January 21, 2021 (the 21st day, of the 21st year, of the 21st century) in Irving, TX.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Doris (nee Mentgen) Gwartney.
He is survived by Sharon, his loving wife of 61 years. Also left behind are his three children: John (Lori) of Keller, TX, Linda (Mark) of Grand Prairie, TX, and Donna of San Clemente, CA. as well as seven grandchildren Tina (Josh), Amber, Crystal (Mike), Ryan (Andria), Allysa, Timothy, and Emily, and five great-grandchildren (Hayden, Astrid, Tristen, Christian, and Austin).
Raymond was a Seabee in the US Navy and then spent the first 37 years of his career working as a mechanic, 35 years of which were spent at Phil Long Ford in Colorado Springs, CO. He was a Ford man through and through, much to the chagrin of his Chevrolet loving father. After “retiring” from that profession, he moved to Texas and bought a Minuteman Press store, where he proceeded to work another 25 years with his wife and son by his side.
Raymond could always be found with his hound dogs and later in life, his cat. Even after retiring as a mechanic, Raymond continued to enjoy working on his 1967 Ford Fairlane convertible. He enjoyed watching ball games and races and could usually be found with a game or race on the television. He could always be found with a project, whether around the house, on his car, or at the print shop. Raymond was best known for his extreme loyalty, sense of duty, and his love of family and friends above all else. He was also known for his generosity and willingness to take care of those around him, his quick wit, a wicked sense of humor, and his love of family vacations, but, most of all, he was known for his epic curlicue mustache.
He was a great man that will be sorely missed by everyone that knew him. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the North Texas Basset Hound Rescue (https://www.bassetrescuedfw.org/).
