Jan Thornton Mcvicker

May 14, 1938 — January 10, 2020

Obituary Jan Thornton McVicker, 81, also known as Meems and Mimi, passed away on January 10, 2020 in Dallas, Texas. She was born on May 14, 1938 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Hazel and Claude Thornton. Jan graduated from Wichita Falls High School and attended TCU where she pledged Pi Beta Phi sorority. After returning to Wichita Falls she met and married Daniel N. McVicker of Bloomington, Indiana. They moved to Lubbock, Texas where their three children Lynn, Dan, and Stacey were born. In 1968, Jan and Dan with their children in hand moved to Dallas and sometime later Irving. During her life she worked as a teaching assistant at Thomas Haley Elementary and as an administrative assistant not only for the SMU athletic director, but also in a leading Dallas realtor's office. Jan was a loving daughter, wife, and mother - she allotted all of her energy into her family. As a daughter, she held her parents in the highest esteem and cherished her memories. As a wife, her best friend was her husband, Dan, of whom she was married for 61 adventurous years while living in Texas, Florida, Ohio, and back again to Texas. Finally, her greatest achievement was that of being a mother. She worked hard to teach her children fundamental life lessons through her lifestyle and faith by modeling hard work, showing sacrifice, and offering her love. Her success as the matriarch of the family is evident through the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren illustrated by loving marriages, academic scholarships, honors, and degrees with both undergraduate and postgraduate work while attending UT Arlington, SMU, Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, Belmont University, Texas A&M, and Belmont Abbey. Jan dearly loved and was loved by her family. She is survived by her husband, Daniel N. McVicker; her children, Lynn McVicker Dempsey and husband, Paul Dempsey; Daniel N. McVicker, Jr. and wife, Susan Walker McVicker; Stacey McVicker Giller and husband, R.S. "Tre'" Giller III; her grandchildren, Meryl McVicker Harris and husband, Andrew Harris; Morgan McVicker; Sam Dempsey; Nicole Dempsey; Remington Giller; and Rowland S. "Gage" Giller IV. As a family we are so thankful for the great care, love, and support given by her caregiving friends at Cottonwood Creek Healthcare Community, her Church family at First United Methodist Church Richardson, and her special buddy, Betty Bevely. A private graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens on 1413 East Irving Boulevard in Irving, Texas.
