Harry Dean Carney

November 19, 1946 — April 6, 2025

Harry Dean Carney of Bowie, Texas, born November 19, 1946, in Dallas, Texas, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family.

Born to Jean Dean, Harry grew up in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas. At 17, on the eve of his 18th birthday, he made the decision to enlist in the United States Navy. He served with honor during the Vietnam War, spending 19 months with boots on the ground, where he was exposed to Agent Orange. The effects of that exposure would have an impact on his health later in life. His service and sacrifice were recognized with a 100% disability rating.

Harry used his GI Bill to further his education, earning his Associate Degree in Applied Arts and Science from El Centro College in 1975. He began his career in healthcare at Methodist Medical Center in Dallas as an X-ray technician and eventually became a distinguished Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, known for his skill, kindness, and dedication to his patients and colleagues. Harry also served as a mentor and teacher to students from El Centro completing their field experience, generously sharing his knowledge and encouraging the next generation of medical professionals. Harry ended his career in 2018 after a number of years as an on-demand diagnostic imaging professional with DiagnosTemps.

Beyond his professional life, Harry was known for his deep love of golf. He found joy, peace, and plenty of laughs on the golf course, especially in his later years alongside his close friend and golfing buddy, Tommie Rains.

Harry is survived by his devoted wife of 42 years, Lesley; his children, Chris and wife Beth, and daughter Ashley; his brothers, Tracy Burton (Paige) and Mike Burton (Kim); and beloved nieces, nephews, and Kansas cousin-in-laws. He also leaves behind his lifelong best friend, John Smith, and his wife, Kaye, who were like family.

He is preceded in death by mother Jean Burton; in-laws, Ernie and Lola Ernsting; and brother Larry Carney.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to his caregivers, Kristen, who was with Harry for 16 months, and Sheila, and to the Solaris Hospice care team—Nurse Haley, CNA June, Chaplain Phillip, and Social Worker Karen for their support and compassion throughout his time in hospice. Also, Nurse Beverly, who cared for Harry with such kindness during his final days.

Harry’s laid-back nature, warm heart, and quick sense of humor made an impact on everyone who knew him. His presence will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
