David Jerome Phillips

April 4, 1941 — July 22, 2022

David Jerome Phillips, 81, of Waxahachie, Texas, peacefully passed away on Friday, July 22, 2022, at home following a short battle with cancer.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 6 at Chism Smith Funeral Home in Irving, Texas, with the Rev. Mike Blalock and Rev. Brian Beard officiating.

David was born April 21, 1941 in Memphis, Tennessee to Thelma Henry and James Allen Phillips, and was raised in the Dallas, Texas area by his grandparents Loylter and Edna Henry .

He married Carol Abney on March 2, 1963 and had five children. He served his country in the US Army, and was stationed at Ft. Hood until his discharge in 1965. As a long-time member of Sherwood Park Baptist Church in Irving, he oversaw the bus ministry, taught Sunday School, as well as Awana, and served in numerous other capacities throughout the years. Although he retired from Waste Management in the 1990s, he had a strong work ethic and continued to hold various jobs well into his 70s.  In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, and watching old western movies.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, David(Becky) Phillips of Red Oak, Texas and Quentin(Dani) Phillips of Hendersonville, Tennessee; daughter Priscilla Parsons of Howe, Oklahoma and daughter and son-in-law Jane (Frank) West of Irving, Texas; grandchildren, Steven (Michelle) Parsons, Misty Parsons, David Phillips, Sarah (Jacob) Reyes, Daniel Phillips, Olivia Phillips, Thomas West, Jaxon Phillips and Austin Phillips; eighteen great-grandchildren; sisters Jane Lumpkinof Dallas, Texas and Susan Dusak of Dallas, Texas;and several nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his wife, Carol; son, Scott Phillips; parents, sister Judy Motley and brother Herbert Lumpkin.
