Chester Raymond Hurt

Obituary Chester (Chet) Raymond Hurt, age 84, of Grand Prairie, Texas passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2020. He was born on November 21, 1935 in Henning, Tennessee to George and Etta Vaughn Hurt. His parents precede him in death along with his two brothers, Bobby Hurt and Joe Hurt. Chet graduated from Ripley High School in Ripley, Tennessee. He served honorably in the Marines, achieving the rank of Corporal. He worked for Braniff International Airways for 30 years and FedEx for 25 years before retiring in 2014 to Grand Prairie, Texas at the age of 78. Chet was a resident of both Irving, Texas and Memphis, Tennessee for 25 years consecutively. While serving in the Marines, he met the love of his life for 60 years, Frances Hurt during a church service in Yuma, Arizona. Even at a young age, as the son of a share cropper, he knew the value of hard work and a job well done, as he worked along side his father and brothers in the fields. As a small child he earned the family nickname "Bully" because of his size not his character. He loved football and played college football as a linebacker at Ole Miss. His favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing, listening to country music and family poker nights as he taught all seven granddaughters how to play. Chet loved his cowboys: both Dallas Cowboys and western cowboys - from Troy Aikman to John Wayne. He was an exception to the standard, a kind and gentle man of great strength and character who loved and supported his family. Chester is survived by his wife, Frances McCollum Hurt; sons, John Hurt and wife, Robin Everheart Hurt, Mike Hurt and wife, Jill Vera Hurt; daughter, Stacey Hurt Edwards and husband, David Edwards; granddaughters, Heather Hurt Armstrong and husband, Wes Armstrong, Lauren Hurt Ashwin and husband, Nick Ashwin, Kaitlyn Hurt, Casey Hurt, Erin Hurt, Emily Edwards, and Sarah Edwards; great granddaughter, Delta Ashwin; among numerous other family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 14th at 12:00 pm in the Chism-Smith Funeral Home Chapel. Inurnment at the Dalllas Fort Worth National Cemetery will be on November 13th at 1:00 pm. The family has requested donations be made in his name to St. Jude's Hospital in lieu of flowers. Service Information
